Biographies

Colleen Beard…
…is Map Librarian at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario. Her background is Physical Geography and Geology specializing in the cartographic sciences. Although Colleen's interests in map librarianship have been contemporary, such as GIS service issues, she has recently developed an interest in digitization projects as a means of preservation. She was pleased that her own views on this topic were confirmed at the Washington conference and she will be sharing these views in her session.

David Brown…
…graduated with a BA (Hon.) from the Department of Geography, Carleton University, in 1978. Since that time, he has worked in the mining industry, academia and has held several positions in the Government of Canada (GOC). He has been with the Library and Archives of Canada since 1981 and has several years of Information Technology (IT) and Information Management (IM) experience. For the past twenty years, Mr. Brown has worked with electronic records at Library and Archives Canada and for the past twelve years he has been primarily involved with developing and implementing geomatic archival solutions as Manager of LAC's Geomatics area.

Henry Castner…
…is Emeritus Professor of Geography, Queen's University where he spent 25 years teaching and conducting research on map design and production, map perception, and most recently on the relationship between mapping and geographic education. This latter interest led to the publication in 1990 of Seeking New Horizons: A Perceptual Approach to Geographic Education and its sequel Discerning New Horizons in 1995, along with several papers, workshops and presentations in schools and professional meetings. He has also published two books on the history of Russian cartography, a children's study atlas of Ontario, and written on a variety of topics including tactual mapping, photomaps, tourist mapping, nautical charts, color charts, and maps in television news. Dr. Castner is a Past President of both the Canadian Cartographic Association and the North American Cartographic Information Society. He now lives in North Carolina where he continues his research and writing interests and developing educational workshops.

Andrew Chapeskie…
…is the President of the Taiga Institute for Land, Culture and Economy. He has worked out of Northwestern Ontario since 1986 focusing on First Nation land-based enterprise and stewardship initiatives. He has researched and written on a variety of aboriginal issues including for the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. Prior to becoming a founding member of The Taiga Institute in 1995, he also served as legal counsel to First Nations and aboriginal community enterprises.

Patricia Connor…
…is the Director of Cartographic Services, Geography Dept., The University of Western Ontario. As well as having over 25 years experience in cartography, Patricia has a background in medical mapping and cartographic editing, and does cartographic/GIS consulting and training with epidemiologists and health planners.

Christine Cullingworth…
…is currently the Information Resources Librarian at the University of Winnipeg. Prior to this she was a Science Reference Librarian at the University of Saskatchewan. Her research focus over the last several years has been geospatial data and libraries. Christine graduated with her Masters of Information and Library Science from Western and two advanced diplomas in Remote Sensing and GIS from the Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS).

Anne Draper…
…graduated with an MLS from the University of Western Ontario in 1983. She joined the National Library of Canada in 1985 as a cataloguer in the Government Documents Cataloguing Section. Since 1996 Anne has been Chief, Government Publications and Serials Cataloguing Division. With the creation of Library and Archives Canada (LAC), she assumed responsibility for the provision of cataloguing in AMICUS for all published cartographic materials in LAC's collection.

Gaetan Drolet…
… is a retired data librarian from Université Laval (Quebec City), but has not completely retired from data. He is currently working for the Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) at Statistics Canada. He was a founding member of a Quebec Universities Libraries Data Group and is a member of the DLI External Advisory Committee. Gaetan has also been heavily involved with the International Association of Social Science Information Service & Technology (IASSIST) for over 15 years and he is currently co-chair of the IASSIST Data Documentation and Citation Interest Group.

Danial Duda…
..is the recently hired Map Librarian at Memorial University of Newfoundland, taking over the reins of Alberta Auringer Wood. He received his B.A. Honours in History (1987) and his MLIS (1999) from the University of Alberta. It was at the UofA where Dan learned the foundations of map librarianship working in the William C. Wonders Map Collection. He developed his passion for cartographic history through his love of military history. Dan is the Chair of the Historic Maps Committee and a member of the Copyright Committee for ACMLA, as well as the New Maps editor for the ACMLA Bulletin. His research interests are cartographic history, sense of place, libraries and warfare, and library instruction.

Christine E. Earl…
…received her B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Western Ontario (1969), her Diploma in Cartographic Technology from Algonquin College (1977) and her M.A. in Geography (1999) from Carleton University. She joined the Department of Geography at Carleton University as Cartographic Technologist in 1977. In 1995, she was appointed Instructor and teaches cartography and introductory GIS. Brian Eddy…
…is a Ph.D Candidate at the Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre (GCRC), Dept. of Geography and Environmental Studies, Carleton University, Ottawa. His main research interests involve interfacing Cybercartography with GIScience, and mapping sustainability and development indicators. Brian is the Team Leader for the Trade Atlas Content team, who are developing content and the web-based interface for the Cybercartographic Atlas of Canada's Trade with the World.

James Ferguson…
…completed a B. Sc.(Agr.) in Environmental Biology and Animal Science at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in cooperation with Dalhousie University. He recently graduated from the University of Guelph with a M. Sc. in Geography specializing in biodiversity modelling and Geographic Information Systems. James is currently employed as a GIS Consultant with the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Steven Fick…
…has worked for Canadian Geographic magazine for 16 years. He was the magazine's first staff cartographer, and now holds the position of Chief Cartographer. He received the CCA's Award of Distinction in 1998. Before coming to the magazine, he was president of Geoscapes Cartographic Art Inc. in British Columbia. Steven is also a successful painter.

Marcel Fortin…
…has been a professional librarian since 1992. He is a graduate of the Masters program at the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Western Ontario and he also holds a Masters degree in History from the University of British Columbia. He has worked as a librarian at the University of British Columbia, the University College of Cape Breton, and since 1999 at the University of Toronto as the Geographic Information Systems & Map Librarian. His passion for maps and cartography began while working at the Library and Archives Canada 's National Map Collection in Ottawa in 1991. Rick Gray…
…holds a BSc (Env) and an MSc from the University of Guelph, where he got hooked on GIS in his second undergraduate year. As an undergrad, he took almost every GIS related course offered at Guelph (cartography, remote sensing, etc). His MSc used GIS as a primary analysis tool. After graduating from Guelph he went back to college and obtained the GIS Applications Specialist certificate from Sir Sandford Fleming College. Rick currently works as a GIS Specialist for the Ontario Weather Network, which is part of Ridgetown College, a satellite campus of the University of Guelph. He also teaches a GIS course at Ridgetown College to 1st year diploma students.

Claire Gosson…
…is a Senior Geographer with GeoAccess Division, Atlas of Canada. Claire worked on the 5th edition of the Atlas of Canada authoring many of the maps in the physical geography section. She is currently the Past-President of the Canadian Cartographic Association, a recipient of the CCA Awards of Distinction for Contribution to Cartography in 1995. She is also the Chair of the Canadian Map Exhibit C ommittee for ICA 2005, the co- editor of Cartouche, the Newsletter of the CCA and serves on the Board of Director of Canadian Council on Ecological Areas. Claire is a chartered cartographer and was also the Past- President of the Ontario Institute of Chartered Cartographer and past editor of the Journal, the Chartered Cartographer.

Sally Hermansen…
…is an Instructor in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia where she teaches courses in cartography, GIS and Vancouver and its Region.

Alun Hughes…
…is a graduate of Cambridge University. A professor in the Department of Geography, Brock University since 1969, he teaches cartography, GIS, remote sensing and surveying. His research interests lie in local history/historical geography, with a special preference to the Niagara Peninsula.

David L. Jones…
…is Map Librarian at the William C. Wonders Map Collection, University of Alberta. Being of Hungarian extraction he has a particular empathy for the unique and valuable Habsburg/Austro-Hungarian Empire collection.

Jean-Pierre Lemieux…
…graduated from Laval University where he obtained a bachelor's degree in Geomatics Sciences (1980) and a second cycle degree in business administration (1987), also from Laval. Since then he has worked for several Geomatics organizations both in the private and public sectors. Six years ago, he was appointed as manager responsible for Topographic Data Access for NRCan, Connecting Canadian Program (NTDB, GeoBase, Geogratis, Toporama Data Access Portals).

Paul Light…
…is currently a student of cartography at the Centre of Geographic Sciences, Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia. Prior to embarking on a career in cartography Paul was a member of the Canadian Forces Regular Army. During his 26 year career in the military he served in various command and staff positions, and locations, Canada and overseas. He is a graduate of the Instructor-in-Gunnery (Air Defence) course and the Land Force Command and Staff course. He retired from the Regular Army in the rank of captain in July 2003 after which he commenced his studies at the Centre of Geographic Sciences. After a successful first year of full-time study Paul is continuing his studies in the cartography programme as a part-time student, looking forward to completing the programme in the 2005-6 academic year.

Xiuxia Liu…
…is a graduating Master's candidate from Geomatics & Cartographic Research Centre at Carleton University. Currently, she is also working on the Cybercartography and the New Economy Project funded by a SSHRC/INE grant (Principle investigator: Dr. D.R. Fraser Taylor). Her main areas of specialization are Geomatics modeling, Web GIS, and geo-visualization.

Jenny Marvin…
…is an Academic Liaison Librarian at the University of Guelph Library providing reference in government publication and data resources. One of her primary roles for the past 5 years has been the strategic and operational development of the Library's GIS service. Specific responsibilities include collection development, reference and information literacy. Jenny holds Masters Degrees in History (Queen's) and Library and Information Science (Western).

Neil MacNaughton…
…is the Director of the Surveys and Mapping Division, Government of Newfoundland & Labrador, where he is responsible for Topographic Mapping, Geodesy, Toponymy, Aerial Photography and Geomatic Services. He is a member of the Canadian Council On Geomatics (CCOG) and the Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC). Neil is a 26 year veteran for most of these activities in his current government position. His academic training is a B.SC. in Surveying Engineering from the University of New Brunswick (1971). He has worked for the Province of New Brunswick and the Council of Maritime Premiers on the Land Registration and Information Service before moving to St John's in 1979.

Andrew Millward…
…is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Natural Resources at Cornell University. He has expertise in the spatial analysis of ecological disturbance, and its mapping, in natural and built landscapes. Themes covered in his workshop represent some Andrew's current research interests in predictive mapping of groundwater seepage in northern temperate watersheds.

Cathy Moulder…
…is the Curator of the Lloyd Reeds Map Collection at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario. She is responsible for geographic information of all vintages, holds a GIS Specialist Certificate from McMaster University and Mohawk College, and particularly enjoys working with McMaster's very fine rare map collection.

Andrew Nicholson…
…has been the GIS Librarian at the University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM) Library since November 2003. Prior to joining UTM, Andrew was the Map & GIS Librarian at the University of Oregon. He has a Master of Library Science (MLS) Degree from Dalhousie and a Diploma in Business Geographics from the Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS) in Nova Scotia. He is currently the Secretary of the Association of Canadian Map Libraries and Archives.

Robert O'Neil…
…is the director of the GeoAccess Division, Natural Resources Canada. Dr. O'Neil has been influential in the creation of the vision, policies, and technological foundations for the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure. The Division is responsible for the Atlas of Canada and will continue to play a major role in the development and operations of core services for the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure. GeoAccess Division also maintains GeoGratis, the largest on-line archive of freely accessible geospatial information in Canada.

Peter Paul…
…has been involved with the Atlas of Canada since the beginning of the digital mapping era in 1988. This 17-year period has included real-time election mapping, internet-based map delivery, the Community atlases project implementation and a North American Atlas partnership.

Gerry Penney…
…was born in Port Union, Newfoundland and Labrador, and educated at Memorial University. He is President of Gerald Penney Associates Limited, an archaeological and heritage consulting firm based in St. John's. Currently he is contracted to the city to prepare an inventory of heritage resources along the proposed Water Street corridor for an interceptor sewer line, part of the harbour clean-up.

Alex Peters…
…is the President of Whitefeather Forest Management Corporation. He has worked for Pikangikum First Nation in a variety of capacities including Community Liaison Officer, a policeman, and as Chief of Pikangikum First Nation for six years. Prior to this work experience he worked for Indian and Northern Affairs Canada on community development projects involving Pikangikum First Nation.

Edith M. Punt…
…graduated from McGill University with a BSc in Physical Geography and Northern Studies. After an apprenticeship in cartography with Nunavik Graphics in Montreal, she went on to the College of Geographic Sciences in Nova Scotia, where she earned a diploma in Cartography. In 1995, she won the Nicholson Cartographic Scholarship from the CCA. The following year she won several awards, including the National Geographic Society Award in Cartography and the Intergraph Award in Computer Cartography from the Canadian Institute of Geomatics, and was recognized by the Nova Scotia House of Assembly for outstanding achievement in cartography. She has been a cartographer and writer at ESRI in Redlands, California since 1996.

James Richmond…
…is a graduate of Sir Sandford Fleming College Cartographic Technology and G.I.S - Cartographic Specialist programs. He recently graduated from Carleton University with a B.A. Honours in Geographic Information Processing. During his last semester at Carleton, he worked at the Department of National Defence - Mapping and Charting Establishment in Ottawa. James is currently employed at CFB Kingston Base Geomatics in Kingston, Ontario.

Bert Riggs…
…holds an undergraduate degree in English Literature from Memorial University and a masters degree in Information Studies from the University of Toronto. He has worked with Memorial University Libraries system since 1984. Since September 1997 he has contributed a weekly column covering various aspects of Newfoundland history to the St. John's Telegram.

John Robson…
…is the author of "Captain Cook's world" (2000) and "The Captain Cook Encyclopaedia" (2004), and joint author of the "Historical Dictionary of the Discovery and Exploration of the Pacific Islands" (Oct. 2005). He is the Map Librarian at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand. He is currently researching Cook's time in Newfoundland and George Vancouver's expedition to the Northwest Coast of America. Robson, who is the NZ representative for the Hakluyt Society, lives in Hamilton with his two corgis.

John Sorrell…
…is the Manager of Product Development at DMTI Spatial Inc. He has been active in the Canadian GIS and spatial data community for over 15 years. John has worked in the public sector, taught University-level courses, and now works in the private sector.

Michael Staveley…
has been a Professor of Geography at Memorial University since 1983. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Reading and did his PhD at the University of Alberta, completing the program in 1973. From 1983 to 1993, Dr. Staveley was the Dean of Arts at Memorial. His research interests are historical, cultural and political geography. He has a sincere interest in the work of Captain James Cook, giving several papers about Cook at past conferences. Dr. Staveley was born in the same region as Cook and he was married in the same church as Cook's parents were. Dr. Staveley also established the James Cook Memorial Scholarship for undergraduate students in Geography and raised over $50,000 as the capital endowment. By sheer serendipity the scholarship was approved on 14 February 1979 which was the 200th anniversary of Cook's death!

Grace Welch…
…is currently the Assistant Chief Librarian (Access) in the Library Network of the University of Ottawa. From 1990 until this recent appointment, she was head of the Map Library at the same institution. She has also held several positions at the National Library of Canada. Grace is currently the Chair of the Advisory Committee on Automation and Delineation of the Geographic Names Board of Canada. She has published articles on cataloguing geospatial data and been involved in several workshops on this topic. She has been a major player for the map community in negotiating improved access to geospatial data for the educational sector at the federal and provincial levels and promoting GIS services in libraries.

Cameron Wilson…
…is the Head of the Content and Connectivity Section of the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, Natural Resources Canada and provides services for the GeoConnections Secretariat. His role within GeoConnections is to negotiate partnerships that contribute to the supply and demand of Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure data, services and technologies. He is also responsible for the day-to-day operations of the GeoConnections Discovery Portal. Cameron has been with Natural Resources Canada since 1997. Prior to his responsibilities with GeoConnections he led a number of projects with the Atlas of Canada and is the Godfather of GeoGratis.

Alberta Auringer Wood…
…is currently the Acting Associate University Librarian and served for over 21 years as the Map Librarian in the Queen Elizabeth II Library of Memorial University of Newfoundland. She has long been an active member of ACMLA and CCA.

Tim Wykes...
…is an active member of the Canadian Cartographic Association, and took the lead in bringing the national conference to Fleming College's Frost Campus in 2004. Tim has worked at the college since 1995 as the Cartography Program Technician and more recently as a Geomatics Department Technician. He coordinates the submission of student work to national and international competitions and contacts alumni to gather employment information. He also serves as a part-time teacher, lecturer, and lab instructor for Geomatics students. Tim has also worked for the Canadian Parks Service as a mapping specialist and he provided contract mapping services for Ontario Provincial Parks.

Patty (Xiaopei) Zhao…
…is a research geographer working for the Atlas of Canada, GeoAccess Division, Natural Resources Canada. Patty's has worked in the cartographic/GIS community for over 20 years in a number of countries, including the Department of Cartography of the Institute of Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences and at the department of Town and Regional Planning for the Government of Botswana. She now develops and designs maps in the online Atlas of Canada.
