Canadian Library Association Emerging Technologies Interest Group

ETIG Newsletter

November 2005

  1. Welcome

The Emerging Technology Interest Group has new convenors this year, Gillian Byrne (gbyrne@mun.ca) and Peter Zimmerman (pzimmer@uwindsor.ca). Gillian is an Information Services Librarian at Memorial University Libraries and Peter is the Arts & Humanities Librarian at the University of Windsor. (Random aside: interesting to note how far technology has roamed from the systems department, huh?) As we're both new to the convenor business it's taken us a while to get on our feet, but we have some objectives for our convenorship, including:

    • Improving communications with members: the newsletter, revamping the website, investigating other communication tools…
    • Actively seeking out sponsorship opportunities: providing travel grants, sponsoring workshops…

  2. Travel Grants

Attending CLA? Let us help you get there! ETIG has two travel grants. Our only stipulations:

    • You must be a member of ETIG (preference will be given to personal members)
    • You must provide a blurb about your experiences at the conference for the ETIG website

Interested? Email either Peter or Gillian.

  3. Access 2007

Part of the ETIG mandate involves awarding the Access Library & Information Technology Conference. If you are interesting in hosting Access 2007, please contact Peter. The deadline for submissions is mid-May, 2006. For more information, check out the guidelines at: http://staff.library.mun.ca/etig/access.htm

  4. Workshop Grants

Planning a workshop? ETIG can help! There are grants available every year - and if we don't use the money, we lose it. The Terms of Reference for the workshop grants can be viewed at: http://staff.library.mun.ca/etig/grants.htm. Apply soon!

  5. Feliciter columns

Have an opinion on the latest technology? Something happening in your library you want to share? Heck, want to get published? ETIG is always recruiting individuals to write columns on technological issues for the Feliciter. So if you have an idea, drop us a line. (Did I mention we offer an honorarium?)

  6. Create us a logo contest!

Ok, so it's not all about what we can do for you… ETIG has been attempting to create a logo for ourselves for some time, with little success. So we thought that, with all the creative people in our interest group, why not put your brains to work? Our challenge to you (or - ahem - a brilliant student you have at your disposal): create an eye catching logo for us, and we'll give you a suitable prize! Details forthcoming.
