  The banner of the Humber Herald bore the message "Edited by J. R. Smallwood" in very large letters during 1928 and 1929. It was strongly supportive of the Liberal Pary and featured highly complimentary accounts of the activities and appearances of Sir Richard Squires. Smallwood's name was gone from the banner in only 1930 issue available. The single issue of the Humber Herald from 1931 contained foreign news, the detailed account of a shooting death in Curling, sports, government notices, poetry and advertisements. The Humber Herald was absorbed by the Western Star, Feb. 27, 1943.

  Published from the Public Ledger office, the Indicator presented a such a satirical account of local happenings it is hard to tell when, if ever, it was being serious. Apparently the Indicator had difficulty attracting subscribers because the editor complained about the state of journalism in St. John's with a bitterness quite contrasting to his usual light-hearted tone:

  With the solitary exception of the Editor of the Patriot , a gentleman devoted to the interests of his country, and nervously solicitous to furnish important information upon various subjects, they get your money, something more than a paltry dollar per annum⁽²⁷⁾, you may be sure, and, in return foist upon you little else in their editorial columns but egotistical tirades about their own concerns, or vapid trash about the affairs of some brother twaddler.

  At first published biweekly, the paper became casual about its publishing schedule. "The Indicator will be published regularly on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays according as we think proper or as there is occasion given by individuals to provoke a publication." (Aug. 16, 1877) If the editor was telling the truth, the last available issue was published in Sandy Point, St. George's Bay, in January 1878, where the paper was relocated due to an unspecified form of "persecution".

Kinatuinamot Illegajuk was originally proposed by a committee chaired by Ian Strachen of Memorial University and was financed by funds provided by the federal government. The name of the paper has been translated either as "to whom it may concern" or "something for everyone".⁽³⁰⁾ Published in English and Inuktitut, it was intended to provide a written form of communication among residents of the Labrador Coast and to record stories, anecdotes and a description of the way of life of the native peoples. Although published at first by the Labrador Inuit Association, it was not the official voice of that organization and criticized it at times. It contained local news, letters, history, stories, advice on matters of local health and sanitation, fishing news, and information on government programs. Reproduced by mimeograph for the first decade, it became increasingly sophisticated in format, changing to a glossy coloured magazine in 1991.
