Established in February 2002 by a motion of Librarian's Council, The Standing Committee on Research (or Research Committee) identifies two areas of priority: (1) to generate enthusiasm for research and scholarship among librarians, and (2) to promote librarians' understanding of research and scholarship and its place in our community.

In order to achieve these goals, the work of the committee is based on the following objectives:

a)  To identify research and scholarly activities happening within the Memorial University Library system. Research and scholarship may be applied or theoretical, and relevant to librarianship or to other areas of expertise.

b)  To promote research and scholarly activities happening within the library system, and create opportunities for librarians to disseminate research and scholarship to colleagues. Opportunities include, for example, an annual Research Fair, as well as brown-bag sessions throughout the year.

c)  To create opportunities for librarians to learn about and gain inspiration from research and scholarship happening at Memorial, both within and outside the library system, through brown-bag and Research Fair events.

d)  To provide support for research and scholarship within the library through the distribution of research funds to qualified applicants; to establish a Research Fund Sub-Committee to carry out this task.

e)  To engage in outreach and promote research and scholarship within the larger library community by inviting colleagues outside Memorial to participate in Research Committee events such as the Research Fair.
