AACR2 rule 21.30M calls for "analytical added entry under the heading for a work contained within the item being catalogued." Furthermore, the heading is to be "that of the person or corporate body or the title under which the work contained is, or would be entered. If that heading is for a person or body, add the title of the work contained to form a name-title added entry heading." This means that the entry for the analytic should be formed according to the same principles used when describing the whole piece, with entry under its own "main entry", either author or title. Thus in the following example from the recent "Format integration" memo:
100 1- |aNicol, Eric,|d1919-
245 10 |aThree plays /|cby Eric Nicol.
505 0 |aLike father, like fun -- The fourth monkey --
Pillar of sand.
three 700s should be made under the name-title headings for Nicol
and the individual plays. When a patron browses the entries
under Nicol, she would then see not only "Three plays" , but the
individual play titles as well. All works by Nicol would be
collocated under the author. Similarly, those searching using
the title "Pillar of sand" should be able to access the title
indexed from 700|t; separate title added entries (740), as shown
in the original "Format integration" memo, should be
unnecessary:
700 12 |aNicol, Eric,|d1919-|tLike father, like fun
700 12 |aNicol, Eric,|d1919-|tFourth monkey [omit the
initial article]
700 12 |aNicol, Eric,|d1919-|tPillar of sand.
Works by more than one authorFrequently there is more than one author named in the author statement given in either 245 or 505. These would naturally be entered under the first named author (followed by title in |t) where there are three or less authors named. Additional author entries (author only) would be made up to the current limit of three. Where there are more than three authors, title analytics (740 with 2nd indicator=2) only would be made. Corresponding personal name entries would not be made.
Uniform title versus free-text title
When you create a name-title added entry, you are, to the best of your ability to do so, creating a uniform title entry. In most cases this will be the only form for the title, but in some there may be a separate uniform title already created for this work. This would be particularly true in the case of translations, where an author-title entry may have already been established for the original title. These should be checked against the name authority file or the Library's bibliographic file to determine the proper uniform title for the analytic. Where a uniform title has already been established in our authority file and it differs from the title actually appearing on the work in hand, you should make an added title entry under the title appearing on the piece. Since this is an uncontrolled analytic title added entry, use 740 for these. In cases where the uniform title cannot be readily ascertained (don't make a research project out of it- just check the authority file and BIBLIO), treat the analytic title as you would a translation title appearing in a 245. That is, make the author-title added entry using the unvalidated translation title. Where the title from the piece is generic ("Poems", "Short stories") your analytic entry should be the form uniform title for this type of work:
700 12 |aWhittier, John Greenleaf,|d1807-1892.
|tPoems.|kSelections
700 12 |aNicol, Eric,|d1919-|tShort stories
