Prescribed sources of authority: For uniform titles, including series, and for all non-Canadian personal or corporate names, the form of heading appearing in LC CD-MARC Names is to be considered authoritative, as supplemented by subsequently issued Cataloguing Service bulletins. For Canadian personal and corporate names, use the Canadiana fiche. For subjects the authority hierarchy is as follows: the latest CSB, CD-MARC Subjects, "Big Red", and Canadiana subjects.
Series: We will accept all series as is on exact-match current DLC copy in terms of tracing policy and form of name. This means that some previously untraced series, particularly those in the form "Jossey-Bass (Wiley, McGraw-Hill, etc.) [subject] series", will now be traced. In practice, current public service policy towards indexing of 490 made it so they were effectively traced anyway.
In most cases, do not research any series from current DLC copy in the LC authority file or in the Division's manual series authority file unless there is good reason to suspect that we have established a series call number for the series in the past. This will generally be flagged by the presence of a blue standing order slip in the book (with a call number), but you might also wish to consult the series file in cases where there is a series call number in the 050|a.
While we will continue to research series for all non-DLC copy including NLC, we will search the LC name authority file first and follow the tracing policy outlined in field 645 for those titles already established there:
645 Series tracing practice t= Traced as series added entry n= Not traced as series added entryIn all cases, only if the title does not appear in CD-Names should the manual file be consulted or a series authority card be made.
There are two exceptions to our blind following of LC NAMES as our authority for series as outlined above: we will continue to shorten "vol." to "v." and we will continue to generate series authority cards for new series classed together.
In yet another bid to streamline operations, your fearless leader hearby decrees that no cross-references need be made within the manual series authority file for DLC-derived classed-together series only. That is, if your book copy contains a 4xx or 8xx not currently in the manual series authority file, but which is present in CD-MARC Names, you need only print out the series for presentation to typing, noting series call number, numbering style (i.e. "v. ___"), special notes, and tracing information that is to be placed on the cards. Do not tick or "x" any desired x-refs (4xx or 5xx) as no corresponding cards will be typed for them.
