Handling of Canadian bilingual publications

Henceforth, we will not make a special exception to our usual cataloguing practice for Canadian works alone, particularly government documents, which have parallel English-French title pages and text. Rather, we will treat these as we do any bilingual texts, including describing the parallel title in 245, if appropriate, and making added entry (246) for the second language title, as long as there exists a parallel text in the second language.

In cases where both languages of a bilingual text appear on a single title page, these titles should be transcribed in the 245 with " =|b" separating them, and a 246 (Indicators=31) should be made containing the parallel title.

In cases where the second language title page is separate from the first, either on a second title page at the front, or inverted with page numbering starting from the back, select one as the primary chief source of information and base your description on that one with appropriate 246 (Indicators=15) for the added title page title.

In all cases, a 546 giving an appropriate note such as:

546 English and French on inverted pages.
546 English and French in parallel columns.

may be used to describe the language content of the text itself.

In the case of inverted pages, use "eng" as the language of the fixed field and "engfre" for 041. For parallel columns, the language of the leftmost column (following Western reading practice) should be used in the language fixed field and should be the first listed in 041.
