Classification of Corpus Christianorum

The Library has for some time maintained standing orders for several of the subseries of Brepols' Corpus Christianorum, including the Series Latina, Continuatio Mediaevalis, Series Apocryphorum, and some of the Instrumenta lexicologica. Up until now these have often waited for some time for better copy to be located, as most libraries class these together under series call numbers. Recently, Collections has sought to fill some of the gaps in our pre-S/O holdings and these are now entering the processing stream. In the midst of all of this, Martin has surveyed faculty in those Departments interested in these sets on the issue of classing them together in the QE2 and all are in agreement that this would be a good thing. Accordingly the following numbers have been assigned to the various parts as noted on the Division's series authority cards:

New volumes for these series should be classed into these numbers as appropriate. Since the volume numbers are given in Roman numerals without literal prefixes (e.g. "no.", "pt.", "T.", etc.), we will use the literal "v." as part of the call number (e.g. Continuatio Mediaevalis CXXI= BR 60 C47 v.121).

Instrumenta lexicologica Latina presents a different problem since these volumes are concordances meant to be used with the corresponding volume from Series Latina or Continuatio Mediaevalis. In assigning call numbers to Instrumenta issues, ignore the volume number in the series statement for Instrumenta, preferring to class these next to their sister volume from the two larger sets. The related main series volume is shown on the page facing the t.p. of the concordance and also in small print at the top of the front cover ("SL"=Series Latina, etc.). Add a final line noting the Instrumenta series (A for the Formae or B for the Lemmata), using the prefix "Conc." as we have done for some time. Hence, for Instrumenta Series A, v. 47, the related Continuatio volume is 67 and the call number would be BR 60 C47 v.67 Conc.A. The concordance volume will be shelved next to its parent volume.

For sets within the series which are not numbered consecutively, use the class number format "v. xxx, etc." with 830s for each volume in the bib record.

As time permits, earlier volumes in these series will be moved out of their topical class numbers in the MAIN stacks to reside with the rest of the set. Series Graeca and Initia will not be classed together at this time, as our holdings of these are low (1 volume and 2 volumes respectively) and we do not have standing orders for them.
