Oversize Books
13 November 1992
This is to apologize for the confusion caused by my "Cataloguing
from copy" document of last November. The "Dimensions" section
(p. 7) led people to use 32 cm. as the benchmark spine height for
placing books into the Oversize stacks. Except for the art and
music sections (the N's and M), shelf height in the stacks is
fairly uniformly set at about 30.3 cm. This means that Oversize
should be used when the 300|c is greater than 30 cm. Remember
that this figure is rounded to the next higher full centimeter,
thus:
30.2 cm. = 31 cm. = OVERSIZE
29.7 cm. = 30 cm. = BOOKSTACKS
I still think that it is wise to give spine height in |c when it
is over 30 cm. or under 12 cm., and also when the width is
greater than the height (e.g. 16 x 28 cm.). Continue to use |c
and |e where needed for A-V and multi-media (in the broadest
sense) items.
