Macmillan/St. Martin's Press co-published works

As you all may be aware, LC in CSB #74 (p. 49), decided to treat the statements "First published in Great Britain 1995 by Macmillan Press Ltd." and "First published in the United States of America 1995 by ... St. Martin's Press, Inc." "...as evidence, for cataloging purposes, that there are two separate editions for the publication, one edition for Great Britain, another for the United States." Inspite of the "M"/St. Martin's Press statement on the title page itself, LC ignored the Macmillan statement and ISBN and assigned the book a Cntry code of "nyu".

Because the co-publisher statement was left off the DLC copy, we felt that we could not state categorically that the particular copy described by the original cataloguing agency (DLC) had the "M" imprint as well as the St. Martin's. For this reason the QEII Library chose to catalogue these with the British imprint listed first, a Cntry code of "enk" and with the 010 removed. The 040 was changed to NfSM|cNfSM.

Recently DLC records have begun to come in with both Macmillan and St. Martin's in the 260 again, as though LC is back to the practice stated in LCRI 1.4D5 in CSB #67. Whether this is a change in policy or a change in the printing of these titles is unknown.<\p>

Henceforth, when you receive one of these co-published titles with DLC or anyone else's copy, and a match between the ISBN on our book and one of the ISBNs on the copy, give both publishers in the 260, ensure that there is a second 020 with a parenthetical publisher statement and leave the 010, 040 and 008/Cntry as they are. If the copy has New York/St. Martin's first and London/Macmillan second, let it be, even if the "M" on our copy is on top. If the copy has New York data in all fields already, simply add the British imprint information in a second |a and |b.
