245 Title statement (NR)

Generally speaking, title added entry is not made for music where there is a uniform title present, since a high percentage of music titles are generic in nature and are not terribly browsable. Titles like “Quartet in C# minor”, “Symphony no. 4 ‘Italian’”, or even “Coronation concerto” are not considered as likely direct entry points since most patrons will search these by the name of the composer and will want to find all quartets, symphonies, or concertos interfiled by form of composition. The authority record for these composer/uniform title entries should include cross-references to the title under which these variants are collected. On the other hand, titles which are unique, at least within a composer’s oeuvre (“Ringing changes”, “Symphony of Psalms”) will trace the title through the 245 unless the score is for an arrangement of the piece.

650 Subject added entry--Topical term (R)

Subject headings for scores take a number of forms. Those of the form "…music" (Orchestral music, Shakuhachi and koto music, Choral Music, etc.) do not receive a subdivision for "Scores" or "Scores and parts" as may most others. There is also a "pecking order" for listing instruments as qualifiers when formulating new subject headings. This may be found in the LC Subject cataloging manual: subject headings H1917.5:

Keyboard instruments
Wind instruments
Plectral instruments
Percussion and other instruments
Bowed stringed instruments

700 Added entry--Personal name (NR)

Use 700 for access to librettists (where the music for an opera is scored; the Libretto itself would be entered under the librettist), editors, transcribers, arrangers, composers of cadenzas, authors of poems set to music, and other personal names connected with a piece of music. If a score contains selections, but not all of a composer's works in a format (the 1st and 2nd quartets, for example), make added entries for up to ten pieces, using the uniform title in |t.

There is a limit of 12-15 added entries (600s & 700s) for musical settings.
