Index to Anspach's A History of the Island of Newfoundland (1819)
This index does not include entries for the preface or appendix. It is
designed to be used in conjunction with the table of contents
provided
by Anspach. The table of contents gives a fairly detailed overview of the contents and this along
with the chronological arrangement for some chapters allows the index to concentrate on
referencing places, people and ships. While Anspach often does not give great detail about a
number of the headings, the headings nevertheless have been noted. The spellings used by
Anspach are replicated. There is a hypertext link
from the "fisheries" entry to Anspach's chapter XV "Of the Newfoundland Fisheries", which was
scanned as a series of GIF files, and an image of the drying and curing of cod in Newfoundland
as taken from a 1715 engraving. Note that the digitization was done using basic software and hardware. There are also links
under governors and ships to lists of the specifically identified governors and ships.
Since the creation of this website the full text of Anspach's work has been made available at Our Roots website.
Please forward any corrections or comments to E.
Browne.
