Herbs with alternate leaves and no stipules. Four sepals, four deciduous petals, six stamens, usually two shorter. Acrid juice. To this family belong Matthiola (Stock). Cheiranthus (Wallflower), Iberis (Candytuft), Isatis (Woad), and Lunaria (Honesty, Moneywort).

Cochlearia tridactylites Banks. Fleshy annual, about six inches. Edible.–Seashores, N. Amer., W. Nfld.–August. Latin, cochlear, spoon, from shape of leaves. Cochlearia cyclocarpa Blake. Biennial. Rosettes of rounded juicy leaves.–Sea-shores and rocks, Nfld.–July. Cochlearia groenlandica L.–W. Nfld. Wet rocky beaches. Rhodora, 1935. Pistolet Bay, Anne M. Jeffers. New to Nfld.

A. Hoary Whitlow Grass.

Draba incana L. D. confuse Ehrh. Hoary plant, a few inches to one foot. Small leaves less than one inch. Oblong pods on stiff stalks, twisted when ripe. Smooth fruit.---Limestone shores, etc., N. Amer., Nfld.---August. Var. confusa (Ehrh.) Poir.---W. Nfld.---August.

B. 463. Rock Whitlow Grass.

Draba hirta L. Alpine. Resembling incana, but fewer leaves on stem. Frit on longer stalks.---Europe; Limestone, Nfld.---July. Small white flowers. Draba has longer pods than alyssum, shorter than arabis. Greek, drabe, acrid.

A. Rock-cress Whitlow Grass.

Draba arabisans Michx.; D. incana var. arabisans Wats. Perennial, sometimes more than foot high. Thin leaves, few teeth. White flowers. Long, narrow, twisted pods, on slender stalks, crowded; lower ones sometimes two inches long.---Limestone cliffs, etc., N. Amer., north-western Nfld.---July.

B. 465. Yellow Arctic Whitlow Grass.

Draba nivalis Lilj; D. stellata Miq. Var. nivalis. Two or three inches. Without leaf, or small one on stem. Many basal leaves about half-inch. Small yellow flowers.---Europe, Labrador, Greenland, Arctic Amer., W. Nfld.---July. Draba arabisans Mx. Var. orthocarpa Fernald & Knowlt.---Limestone cliffs, W. Nfld.---July.
