EUROPEAN ELM. SCOTCH OR WYCH ELM.

Ulmus glabra Huds.; U. scabra Mill., U. montana Stokes. Large tree without suckers. Glabra because bark remains smooth for years. Leaves short-stalked, unequal at base, rough on upper side and downy underneath. Dense clusters reddish flowers. Fruit one seed in thin, flat, round, notched case.--Europe, Asia. Introduced N. Amer. and Nfld.--June. Very near Ulmus campestris, the common English Elm.

SLENDER-STALKED NETTLE.

Urtica gracilis Aiten. Slender perennial, two to six feet. Slender leaves on bristly stalks. Flowers in compound clusters, smaller than dioica.--Dry places, N. Amer., W. Nfld. Urtica viridis Rydb. Stouter than gracilis, with coarse teeth.--W. Nfld. Latin, uro, to burn.
