Southcott's* Ivy Family       Waghorne


Araliaceae (Ivy Family.)

Shrubs or trees with much the same characters as Umbelliferae.

Aralia Nudicaulis.—Sarsaparilla. Stems scarcely rising out of the ground, smooth, bearing one long-stalked leaf and a shorter naked flower stalk with 2 to 7 umbels; 5 leaflets on each of the three divisions of the leaf. The horizontal roots which are several feet long are steeped and used as a tonic.
