Herbaceous plants with many ribbed or fleshy leaves, spreading horizontally from the roots. Flowers grow in spikes and are conspicuous by their long stamens. Found by roadsides everywhere. Birds are fond of the seeds.
Plantago Major.---Plantain. Leaves egg-shaped, very tough, on long channeled stalks. Flower stem cylindrical. Flowers green.
