To this family belong Californian Eschscholtzias. Poppies have usually two sepals and four petals. Sepals drop off.

Papaver somniferum L. (The Opium Poppy). Erect, glaucous-green, smooth annual. Large flowers, often very double. Grown in Asia and Europe for drug; opium and poppy oil from the capsules.–Gardens. Nfld.

Papaver Rhoeas L. (Field Poppy) Annual, with stiff bristly hairs. Large scarlet flowers with dark purple centre. Common in cornfields in Europe. Its double flowering varieties (Shirley Poppies), cultivated in gardens. N. Amer., Nfld.–July.

Papaver orientale L. Exotic. Tall perennial. Vivid red flowers, six inches or more broad. Rough leaves, stems, and capsules. Gardens.–July.

Papaver nudicaule L. Perennial, nearly one foot. Leaves all at root. Yellow flower, two or three inches wide. Capsule with many bristly hairs.–Europe, Asia, Greenland, Labrador, N. Amer. Introduced, Nfld.–July.
